]]> Comment on RENT VS OWN – CATCH 22 REALITY CHECK FOR YOUR BUDGET by Carol Pool http://frugalfabulousfinds.com/rent-vs-own-catch-22-reality-check-for-your-budget/#comment-17602 Carol Pool Thu, 10 May 2012 18:22:04 +0000 http://frugalfabulousfinds.com/?p=28791#comment-17602 I have a sister who has rented basically all her life and has never put a dime back for tough times.She has 4 kids 3 of whom are grown and have fallen into their Mothers footsteps of renting and never putting a dime back for tough times.My sister is now almost 52 years of age and has lost the job that she has had for almost 12 years.Her husband has been a Truck Driver all his life,but has a lung issue in which it makes it difficult for him to breath.He has to unload his own trailers and has great difficulty due to his breathing,and only God knows how much longer he can continue to work.My sister has always said that it's a waste of money to buy your own house because of many of the same reasons that you have listed above.After her husbands health started to decline and she lost her job we were talking about whats going to happen when she and her husband neither one can no longer work.I told her that there is no way a landlord will let her remain in a house that she doesn't pay rent on,and that she shouldn't bank on Social Security to be enough to cover rent,utilities,groceries,medicines,etc if there is even any Social Security when we reach retirement age.I understand no bank or mortgage company will allow for missed payments either,but with all the years that she has put money in someone else's pocket for her rent,she could have paid in full for a house that is totally hers by the time she retires.She got to thinking about what I said and she realized that at her age she probably would not be able to pay a house off by the time she is able to retire and draw Social Security,but she took some of her income tax money and bought a travel trailer to where she could at least have a roof over her head when she is old and no longer able to work. So my advice would be to quit throwing away your hard earned money by renting and start applying it to a house that you can one day own and be able to live in when you are old and can no longer work.We can't count on our children to take us in and take care of us in our old age nor would I want to take away from my children by having to have them support me.This is my opinion,only because I don't want to be dependent upon others to help me when I can no longer do for myself.
