How To Cancel Amazon Prime in Few Easy Steps: Guide and Explanation

Are you finished with Amazon Prime? The service isn’t for everyone. Take a look at our guide to learn how to cancel Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime is a great service, but it’s not for everyone. There are several reasons you might be considering canceling your monthly or yearly membership.

Ahead, we’ll give you some reasons you might want to get rid of Amazon Prime, as well as the arguments for keeping it. Once you’re sure of what you want to do, we’ll give you a step-by-step walkthrough of Amazon Prime.

Why Cancel Your Membership?

There are several reasons you might not want to keep Amazon Prime any longer. The marketplace is becoming a bit more competitive, and the recent price hike has led a lot of people to hit that cancellation button.

In this section, we’ll make a case for why you should cancel your Amazon Prime membership. Don’t worry if you’re a Prime fan, though. We give some reasons why you might want to hold onto the membership in the section below.

You’re Buying Too Much

Two-day and same-day shipping is an attractive beast. One of the primary reasons a lot of people cancel their Amazon Prime subscriptions is because it makes excess spending too easy.

South Park even created a whole episode around the concept of making online purchases and completely forgetting about them. The practice is a joke at this point, but it has very real consequences.

Spending too much on Amazon can be a huge problem for some people, and removing the temptation is a great way to save some money.

You Aren’t Buying Enough

The other side of the “Amazon Prime isn’t worth it” coin is that you aren’t buying enough items to justify a nearly $120 annual subscription. Two-day shipping is fantastic, but only if you need your items in two days.

Some people will use Amazon for supplemental purchases, and sometimes don’t touch it for months at a time. Is it really that important to get your luxury items within two days instead of three to five? For some people, the answer is no.

Of course, the Prime benefits don’t end with two-day shipping, but a lot of users never touch Twitch Prime or Prime TV. If this is you, you might want to think about canceling your Amazon Prime membership.

The Price Hike

This reason probably led to a lot of people to cancel their Prime subscription. Amazon raised their annual price from $100 a year to $119 a year earlier in 2018. The price for a month is now $12.99 where it used to be $10.99. Even the student price for Prime went up this year.

Although the price difference might not seem like a lot to some people, it shows that Amazon is steadily rising their price over the years. If you remember, a year of Amazon Prime cost around $80 a few years back. There are likely more price hikes in the future, and Prime might’ve run its course for you.

Prime Video is Underwhelming

One of the massive benefits of Amazon Prime for some subscribers is Prime Video. They have some fantastic original series and give you access to TV shows and even Thursday Night Football this year.

Unfortunately, Prime Video can’t hold a candle to the offerings of Hulu and Netflix. For some, the Prime originals don’t do enough to sell them on the service as a whole, which can be the reason you decide to cancel Amazon Prime altogether.

WalMart 2-Day Shipping

WalMart is coming directly for Amazon with their free two-day shipping on select items. For some, this promise is enough to cancel their Amazon Prime membership completely.

The offerings from WalMart aren’t as vast as they are for Amazon Prime members, but we’re sure they’ll narrow the gap in the coming years. Some people who only use Amazon Prime for the free two-day shipping feature are considering cancellation because of programs like these from WalMart, and they have a valid argument.

Why Keep Your Membership?

Of course, Amazon Prime isn’t all bad. There’s a reason that millions of customers think the service is worthwhile. After all, it gives you access to free two-day shipping, Prime Video, Twitch Prime, and other exclusive deals.

Prime Video is Great

Even though Prime Video doesn’t come close to Netflix or Hulu regarding sheer numbers, it does offer substantial value for the monthly price. Hulu costs $8.00 per month, and Netflix now costs $10.99 per month, and neither comes with Twitch Prime benefits or free two-day shipping.

The combination of Amazon’s streaming service is one of the best perks you could ask for and comes with some high-budget originals you can’t watch anywhere else. For many, this feature alone is worth the monthly subscription fee.

Twitch Prime for Gamers

When Amazon bought Twitch, it marked a huge moment in the streaming and gaming community. The implementation of Twitch prime was an even bigger step forward and has incentivized people to buy the service when they were previously on the fence.

Those who regularly watch and subscribe to popular Twitch streamers probably don’t want to cancel their Prime Membership. After all, a subscription to a Twitch streamer will cost you $4.99 per month.

You will get a free subscription to any streamer with a Prime membership, which can seem like a free $5 off your Prime bill every month. For many, this feature is enough for them to keep their monthly Amazon Prime membership.

It’s Simply Easy to Use

Amazon Prime makes shopping much easier. You don’t have to go to the store to buy things anymore. Simply put in your order and wait two days for delivery.

This is the most obvious reason to keep Amazon Prime, but it’s still worth noting. You might be surprised how much you miss the luxury of free two-day shipping once it’s gone.

Canceling Your Prime Membership

Figuring out how to cancel Amazon Prime isn’t too difficult, but we’re here to make it even easier with a step-by-step tutorial. You’ll see a drop-down menu where it says “Hi <your name>.” There are a lot of options after you click here, but you’re going to want to look for “Your Prime Membership.”

At first glance, you might think that the subscriptions tab or “Your Account” tab will take you to the correct area, but stick with “Your Prime Membership” for now.

On the bottom-left hand side, you should see an additional link that says “End Membership and Benefits.” Slick this link, and it will take you to the walkthrough of the three-step process on how to cancel Amazon Prime.

Of course, Amazon will try to dissuade you from canceling and will remind you that paying yearly is cheaper - if you’re paying monthly already, that is. You’ll see three buttons from here: Remind Me Later, Continue to Cancel, and Keep My Membership. Click the one in the middle that says “Continue to Cancel.”

After that, you’ll have three more options. Amazon will ask you if you want a later reminder again or offer to cancel your membership when the current payment cycle runs its course. You can elect to cancel the membership when you’re done paying, or hit the “End Now” button in the middle.

From there, you’ll be taken to a screen that confirms your cancelation. You will also receive an email noting the change and asking whether or not you want to come back. Your Prime benefits are over at this point, so make sure you’ve finished watching your Prime Video shows and bought anything you wanted with the two-day shipping.

The Amazon Help Page Method

We included the step-by-step tutorial on how to cancel Amazon Prime above, but we made it easy with this tactic. Navigating to the help page and ending your membership isn’t the easiest way to do it, but you can go directly to the cancellation page through this link. It will take you directly to the post you need to see and the buttons you need to press.

From there, just click the “End Membership” button. It will probably ask you for your login credentials again, but just enter them in, and you’re good to go. Amazon will try to get you to keep your membership with an additional “Are you sure?” type of page, but click through that, and your membership will be over.

Getting a Refund for Amazon Prime

There are a couple of ways to get a refund on your Amazon Prime membership, and the first should be automatic. You should receive your monthly fee if you cancel within three days and don’t make any purchases.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to receive a refund if you sign up for a yearly membership. You might be able to talk with customer support if you haven’t used any Prime benefits, but watching Prime Video and buying items will limit how much you can do here.

In some cases, you might be eligible for a refund when you cancel - even if you’ve used Prime benefits. Your refund will consist of your monthly fee, minus the value of any Prime benefits you might have used before cancellation. Again, this process should be automatic, but you can contact customer support if you have any problem with it.
