As an early childhood educator and a mommy of two young children, I cannot express the importance of “learning through play” enough. Whether your child likes to play dress up, loves to climb or playing with toy cars…they are learning while they play. Each new adventure brings a new opportunity of learning for your child. My daughter absolutely loves to create artwork – crayons, markers, paint, clay and more…everything she creates is a masterpiece! So, when a company called Color it by Numbers contacted me about trying out their products, I was definitely very excited!
About Color It By Numbers
Color It By Numbers is a fascinating series of coloring books that will leave no child indifferent. They are special in that numbers identify colors to be used in filling picture areas. This is an exciting process that helps develop the imagination. While painting the pictures, your child will quickly learn new numbers and colors while also gaining computer skills. This turns coloring into a useful pastime.
Coloring pages are available in three different modes:
Easy, which encourages number recognition. The coloring spaces are large enough to allow for beginning coordination skills. If the kids don’t care for the preset colors, it’s easy to change the layout to colors they would prefer.
Expert mode has small spaces to develop fine motor skills and is more like the traditional color by number books.
The final selection is “normal” coloring; allowing children to express creativity and choose from a wider variety of colors.
My Review
For children beginning to learn numbers, Color it by Numbers encourages number and color recognition. Children also develop fine motor skills and computer skills by using the mouse. If your children are older, and know their numbers and colors, you also have the option to turn off the number feature and allow children to color the pictures however they want, encouraging creativity.
What I really liked about the program is that the drawings really help your childr learn their numbers quickly and easily — as well as keeping their interest and making them happy.
My daughter wasn’t just coloring a picture of a princess, she was learning how to concentrate on memorizing the identical numbers. Plus, when she wasn’t sure about the number, the program would give her subtle “hints” to find the rigth one. If your child tries to color in a picture with the wrong-numbered color, the program won’t allow that, instead hinting at which paint bottle number to choose. So your child won’t be upset, even if it takes a long time to find the right number, and the picture is always colored in correctly.
And the best part….no mess to clean up! The entire program is done on the computer…so no need to get all the art supplies. Everything your child needs is included in the downloadable program, and will provide endless options and lots of learning opportunites.
The coloring books are available for Windows and Mac and can be adapted for all screen resolutions. Plus, you can listen to music and sounds while coloring as well 😀 All of their coloring books can an be downloaded in trial versions for FREE, or you can purchase the full version for $9.99 per book.
