Warmer weather is inching into our lives and summer will be here soon enough. The warm up includes beautiful summer nights. The last thing you want is to spend your evenings with thousands of mosquitoes biting and harassing you! Many cities today spray for mosquitoes in the summer, but sometimes that just isn’t enough.
For lots of amazing money saving ideas I always head over to Pinterest for some of the best DIY projects. That is where I found the ultimate mosquito catcher. It only costs a few dollars and a little time to make.
The mosquito catcher guide from thesurvivalistblog.net explains in just a few easy steps how to rid your outdoor area of mosquitoes with water, sugar, yeast and a plastic 2-liter soda bottle.
What you’ll need:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle
Directions:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.) Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.
Other ways to reduce mosquitoes in your garden:
- Do not have standing water around your home
- Keep gutters free of debris and water
- Change water in bird baths and wading pools at least once a week and keep swimming pools cleaned and chlorinated.
- Keep windows and door screens in good working order to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
- Use mosquito netting over infants carriers when infants are outdoors.
- Always use a good insect repellent
