Description
Ever wish you’d paid more attention in math class? From third grade to senior year of high school, it went in one ear and out the other, didn’t it?
But now you’re staring at the new washer and dryer, trying to figure out the percentage of sales tax on the purchase price. You multiply something by something, right? Or you’re scratching your head, wondering how to compute the odds that your football team will take next Sunday’s game. You’re pretty sure that involved ratios. The problem is, you can’t quite remember.
Here you get an adult refresher and real-life context–with examples ranging from how to figure out how many shingles it takes to re-roof the garage to the formula for resizing Mom’s tomato sauce recipe for your entire family.
Forget higher calculus–you just need an open mind. And with this practical guide, math can stop being scary and start being useful.
My Thoughts
School has started, and for some of you that means helping your children with math homework! If you are someone that didn’t excel in math when in school, or if it has been too many years to count when you last did an Algebra problem – then this book is definitely for you! As an educator, this book is very fun and refreshing – and allows you to really see math in the “real world” being used in everyday situations.
One of the reasons that math is so challenging in the real world is because of the way it’s taught in school. On a test or worksheet, you were usually given all of the information that you would need to solve a problem. Not so for everyday math. So, each time you’re faced with a real-world math problem, ask yourself, “Do I have all of the information?” Details like membership fees, gasoline and taxes may strip you of your savings, making another option the better deal.
I shared this book with my mom who currently has a son in 6th grade – and she said that this book has really given her alot to work with, and gave her confidence in helping my little brother with his homework. And for those of you who are beginner couponers, or want to start budgeting for your family – I would suggest this book to you as well. You cannot be frugal shoppers without having some good math skills!
