My Review
When I started living a frugal life I had no idea how much it would change my life. When you have a family of four (six, if you include our dogs), you have to look for deals and ways to save in every possible way. And Toni House said it right…”stretching a meal, stretches a dollar”. Grocery shopping is not just making a list, cutting coupons and hoping you are under budget each week…you have to have a strategy, or a PLAN in place. I have learned the hard way, as most families have, that money can only go so far; and when it comes to feeding your family, that may mean going to more than one store to get the best sales, cutting coupons each week, and counting those pennies to make it work.
There are several great points that this book has to offer, including tips for grocery shopping, menu planning, and how to make leftovers for less. Reducing our grocery bill to $85 week has already been a goal for me every week, even before I came across this read. So, to be honest, I am not sure if this book is really that NEW or something that I would read again and again. I like that the book was short, to the point, and had great steps to keep in mind when saving money…but like many frugal blogs, this is something that we do already.
Some of the things she suggests are things that really would just work for her. Like being able to stretch 2 lbs of ground beef into three meals…as a family of four, this is very unrealistic. Or having a breakfast bar for breakfast everyday for four days…I don’t know about your kids, but mine like to have something different just about everyday. Leftovers are a definite must for us, but after a day or so…you can only enjoy it for so long.
Something else that I noticed is that although the author recommends using coupons and utilizing store sales, she never really showed how she used them to her advantage. I really think that would have been a bigger focus in the book…with that said, I would recommend this book to someone who is in need of getting their budget under control (when it comes to buying food at the grocery store). This book would be ideal for someone who needs help with the basics of saving money (food-wise).
