The Pregnant Entrepreneur by Darla DeMorrow

How to handle pregnancy’s physical, emotional, and financial baby bumps while running your own business. It was written for women who build or own a business before they start their family. If you run your own business and you are newly pregnant OR are planning a pregnancy, this book is for you.

Until now, working women were all lumped together when it came to pregnancy. It turns out that women who own their own business have a whole different set of issues than do their corporate counterparts.

  • Who pays for your maternity leave?
  • How do you credibly sign new contracts when you can’t see your toes?
  • How do you set limits on your business for the benefit of your baby, when you’ve never had to before?

Published by, The Pregnant Entrepreneur, is available now at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other online retailers, and will help address and answer these questions and more.

About the Author

Darla DeMorrow is a certified professional organizer (CPO®), speaker, and owner of HeartWork Organizing, based in Wayne, PA.  After twenty years of experience in both corporate and small businesses, she decided to have more fun by combining her two loves, making homes more beautiful and meeting interesting people.

A mother of two daughters (just like me 🙂 ), she could not find any books on how to run your own business while pregnant, and decided to write one of her own! She said “The Pregnant Entrepreneur is first for my girls, then for all the women that I hope it will encourage.  While there are more and more women starting businesses today, many women put their dreams on hold or minimize their efforts when they have kids.  I hope that women entrepreneurs will be more confident and profitable, whether their businesses are multi-national or teeny-tiny.”

My Review

For the past few months, reading has become one of my favorite things to do. Not only does it allow me to relax, but it also encourages me to learn. I am not a business owner, or an entrepreneur, but I loved the motivation that this book has given me to maybe start my own business someday.

For those of you that already have your own business, or maybe you are thinking of starting one of your own – then this book is one that I would highly recommend! It’s a great guide to helping moms, develop their lifestyle business – whether you’re pregnant or not, or have little ones running around already.  There is practical information on how to manage everything from birth plans to customers, finances to taxes, and suggestions for managing an unconventional schedule.

This book definitely qualifies as a personal development book, as well as a practical business ‘how to’ book. offers readers another way to look at pregnancy: a project with a deadline. She trades off between pregnancy and business as if they intertwine with one another. Budgeting, planning and organization attain to both.

Whether you’re running (or thinking of starting) a small or large business of your own, any expecting mom is sure to find support and great advice in this book! Darla provides a business plan for the reader to fill in, which is followed by a birth plan example and other helpful documents to help the pregnant business woman organize the details for both baby and company in a way that is benefitial to both experiences. You can find these free downloadable documents on her website here:

I have never personally seen a book that combines business and pregnancy all in one. Not only will you learn the how-to’s of running your own business, but you will also learn about your own personal pregnancy and what to expect after your little one comes as well. If you are interested in creating a business built around you (and your family) then this book is a great place to start!
