It’s time for Cinco De Mayo! This holiday, not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, means the “fifth of May” in Spanish. This is an annual celebration held on May 5. Celebrated in both the United States and Mexico this holiday commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the heavily favored French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In Puebla it is actually called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla, or The Day of the Battle of Puebla. Mexican Americans also observe the holiday as a source of pride. It is an opportunity to honor their ethnicity.
In the United States the holiday began to gain popularity in the 1940’s. By the 1980’s Cinco de Mayo started to become the holiday as we recognize it today. It’s popularity can be traced to both the rise of the Latino population in the United States and product marketers, especially beer and liquor companies. Today the holiday has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and is especially popular in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
