One of the best ways to save money around the house is to shop at thrift stores. This shopping habit is also environmentally friendly! I found so many great household items at thrift stores from decorative glass and silver pieces to lamps and lamp shades. Below I have listed some of my best frugal thrift store shopping tips that you can use the next time you decide you want to shop thrifty:
1. Head out on your shopping adventure with a good attitude. Sometimes you will find great items and sometimes absolutely nothing. But, it’s important to keep a cheerful disposition.2. Make sure you know the right location to thrift shop in. For example, if there is a Goodwill store in a nice area of town, start there. In some cities and towns there will be groupings of thrift stores, that is a good indicator on where to go, as well. I picked up a Pottery Barn rug for my family room at an upscale Goodwill, for example.
3. When you travel, check out local thrift stores. For example, if you thrift in a Southern town you may be able to pick up vintage Coca-Cola items or other Southern heritage pieces that you wouldn’t find in the Midwest. On the flip side, a thrift store in New England will carry vastly different items, as well.
4. Have you ever found yourself redecorating or getting rid of old furniture and decor around your house because of the change in seasons? If you are doing this, other people probably do it too! Hit the stores and see what you can find.
5. Call your local thrift stores and see what days they accept items and when they place the items on the store floor. The popular thrift store near my house accepts items every day of the week. However, they only places new items out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Naturally, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to shop there.
6. Make sure to check the internet, as well. Sites like Craigslist are a goldmine for household decor and furniture. Also, your area may have a Facebook group called swip swap or other local sale sites that people list items for sale. Of course, be safe and meet in public places to sell or buy items but you really can get some great deals this way.
