As an educator specializing in educational technology I am always searching for NEW programs that assist children in reading. Educators and parents cannot expect the same type of teaching to take place, as it did twenty, ten or even five years ago. Technology changes faster than the speed of light these days, and so does the world of education. With all that said, that leads me to share with you an amazing NEW reading program designed with children in mind, called Looney Tunes ClickN Read Phonics that I was fortunate enough to test out first hand and share my product review with you all.

The Letter Sound Zone
All phonics lessons begin here. Children learn all of the letter sounds and their corresponding letter shapes required to master reading as well as spelling and keyboarding skills.
- Letter Sounds Selection – Over the 100 lessons 61 phonics letter sounds are systematically introduced and practiced.
- Spelling Letter Sounds – Learn keyboarding skills by typing sounds, words and complete sentences.

The Listening Zone
Next, letter sounds are systematically blended into beginning, middle and ending sounds in words. Letter sounds are then used in word blending exercises teaching how to decode individual sounds and combine them to create words.
- Beginning, Middle and Ending Sounds in Words – Your child will learn which letter, from a set of letters shown, matches the beginning, middle, or ending sound in 188 presentations of these recited words.
- Word Blending – Your child will learn how to blend separate sounds together to form the sound of these 357 individual words.

The Reading Zone
This area uses the letter sounds and word blends previously learned forming new words and builds the ability to read complete English sentences and short stories with ease. The story reading exercise contains the equivalent of dozens of children’s early reading books.
Progressively over the 100 lessons the following exercises are presented:
- Sight Words – Learn to read the most commonly used words in the English language, also referred to as “high frequency sight words.”
- Spelling Sight Words – Learn to read and spell words from the Sight Words exercise using the keyboard.
- Word Families – Word families are groups of words that are closely related enough to form a ‘family’. Learn hundreds of words belonging to dozens of word families.
- Word Endings – Learn the most commonly used word endings such as “s”, “ed”, “ing”, “y”, and more.
- Silent E Rule – Learn how to identify words that contain a “silent e” and learn their proper pronunciation.
- Making Sentences – Learn to read and construct sentences using nearly 400 different words.
- Sentence Dictation – Learn to read and spell complete sentences using the keyboard.
- Prefixes – Children learn the meaning of prefixes, how to use them and definitions of the words they are used with. Examples of the many prefixes taught are “pre”, “re”, “sub”, “dis” and “non.”
- Suffixes – Children learn the meaning of suffixes, how to use them and definitions of the words they are used with. Examples of the many suffixes taught are “ful”, “less”, “ure”, “ive” and “ion.”
- Story Reading – Children view and read along. The short stories include letter sounds, words and other elements previously taught. From single sentence to multiple sentence stories, equaling a small library of early reading books.
The Speed Zone
This exercise builds the automatic decoding skills needed to master reading. The final exercise in every lesson is the Speed Zone, where all letter sounds and words taught from prior lessons are reviewed and practiced.
- Letter Sound Review – Presented in random order, children quickly learn to identify letter shapes for letter sounds.
- Word Review – Presented in a random order, children quickly learn to identify words that match the word sounds.
My Review
Like mother, like daughter…my oldest daughter LOVES technology and she is always wanting to “work” on the computer with mommy. So when I told her about this special Looney Tunes program that would teach her how to read, she was more than thrilled! Here is a recent picture of her playing one of her favorite online games.

Looney Tunes just happens to be one of my daughter’s favorite cartoons. Every Saturday morning we all snuggle together in bed, and watch the old classic zany characters that I used to watch when I was little.
As a parent, I would have never thought to encourage my daughter to watch cartoons – but for this program, I will definitely make an exception! The lessons are very short (about 10 – 15 minutes max) and teach so many wonderful skills: how to type, use a mouse, letter sounds, sight words, and most importantly how to read. I am so proud of my 3 year old daughter who is about 1/3 of the way through the program and is reading sentences on her own. Now everywhere we go, she recognizes words and tries to sound them out. Its absolutely amazing!!
I would highly recommend educators (early childhood, elementary, special needs, ESL, etc.) and parents with children ages 3 & up, to try out this product for yourself. You will be so impressed with the results, and your children will love learning with their favorite Looney Tunes characters. It is fun, interactive, and something you won’t find anywhere else ~ a perfect program for beginning readers!
