As a parent and an educator, I cannot tell you how excited I am to see this wonderful event…National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day. From a parents perspective, I want to be honest and share that school lunch has definitely scared me a little bit over the years. It definitely wasn’t the most nutritious, or filling, but it was what many families paid good money for to provide a meal for their child each day. I know that in a few years my oldest will be going to Kindergarten (which I cannot believe), and I want to make sure that we are getting our moneys worth, and providing a healthy and safe meal that will encourage our child to do their best at school.
As an educator, I know that some children depend on school lunch for their everything. In some homes, where money is tight, and a budget is hard to keep up with, those families cannot provide three meals a day everyday. So with that said, it is extremely important to know that this 1 meal a day that the school provides is giving adequate nutrition, vitamins, protein and more.
What is National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day?
National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day is a grassroots effort to bring families together with schools to share a meal and share ideas. The signature event takes place on October 17, 2012 ( 10-17-2012 ), during National School Lunch Week.
It’s a day for parents across the country to visit their children’s schools and have lunch with them in the cafeteria. The goal is to learn more about what goes into putting together a healthy lunch, and for parents and school officials to open the lines of communication so they can work together to provide kids with the healthiest meals possible. The day is sponsored by KIWI, the School Nutrition Association, the Whole Kids Foundation, and Stonyfield. All wonderful companies, by the way!
Why is this day so important?
The event is important because it’s an opportunity for schools to showcase their meals and provide parents with more information about lunchtime—from what goes into getting a healthy meal on a child’s tray, to what the day-to-day lunch experience is like, to what new initiatives, plans, or updates have been made to the menu.
I would highly recommend any parent, educator or care giver to urge your schools to be apart of this event. Even if cannot be on October 17th, you can always host a Lunch Day event any day during the school year!
