Are you looking for a way to teach your child how to write? As an elementary school teacher, and someone who has been in the education field for more than six years, I cannot express enough how incredibly important hand writing is. If you think about it…do you remember when you learned how to write? Was it easy/hard? Do you recall the ways that your teacher taught you to hold your pencil a certain way, and/or took the time to encourage you to practice daily? For many people, you probably don’t remember this experience which is why Steps4Kids has created a wonderful video to teach modern manuscript letters.

If you are a teacher, or someone that home-schools ~ then this DVD would be perfect for you! Keep in mind though, that this DVD teaches the D’Nealian® style of printing, rather than the traditional block printing (also known as Zaner-Bloser®).

Considered one of the “Top Videos for Students” by Booklist Online (August 2011), the Steps4Kids to Write Modern Manuscript DVD provides instructional help to those teaching children how to print using the D’Nealian® or similar italicized pre-cursive printing approach.

With approximately 90 minutes of instructional help, this award winning penmanship DVD shows how to write both upper and lowercase letters using video modeling and inviting audio instruction. Each demonstration is preceded by a colorful graphic that shows the letter, introduces the letter’s sound and sight words to help viewers develop reading skills.

Letters are taught in groupings that share common letter strokes (which makes practicing even easier!). Drawing breaks are interspersed (throughout the video) after the groupings to reinforce letter strokes by showing how to draw using select letters. Look2Write™ game breaks are also used whereby the viewer is shown words and asked to identify the word spoken by the narrator to reinforce reading of the words.

Steps4Kids Modern Manuscript DVD has also won several awards and honors, including: “Media of the Year” (CreativeChild Magazine; Category: Classroom DVDs), “Best Vacation Product” (Dr. Toy; Category: Educational Skills Builder), and Editor’s Choice (The ToyMan™), and “Top Videos for Students” (Booklist Online).

All Steps4Kids DVDs are made in the U.S.A., and in my opinion have all been extremely impressive (you may recall the PR I did on their multiplication DVD back in July). I would love to try out the “Write your ABCs” DVD someday with my daughter who is 2.5 years old. She may be young, but she was definitely interested in learning how to write after she watched parts of the “Modern Manuscript” video with me 😀 In fact, we have already started working on the letters of her first name!
