PRODUCT REVIEW+GIVEAWAY: BIRDS+BEES+KIDS VIDEO

As a parent to two young children, I haven’t really taken a lot of time to start thinking about when we should talk about the birds and bees. To be honest (and I hope I am not the only one)…I am a little nervous when that day will come. Our children are growing up fast – and faster than we think.

Do you remember when you first learned about sex? Was it from a parent, or a friend? Do you remember how old you were? My situation…I don’t remember how old I was, but I do remember watching the “puberty video” in 5th grade – where the boys/girls were separated and we learned about the changes that would be coming to us before middle school. My little brother (who was in 5th grade this past school year) watched a simliar video this past spring.

Did you know that most children know what sex is by the time they are in kindergarten? Well, according to “Birds+Bees+Kids: The Basics” video by Amy Lang, that is when they SHOULD know the basics!

This online video is everything you need to get the sex talks started! This engaging, empowering and helpful guide for parents of all beliefs, will give you just what you need to get the conversations started with your children. This video makes you feel like you are a parent in a sexual ed course…NOT something you would watch with your child. Amy Lang, a sexual health educator, discusses her own experience talking with her own child about what sex is; and does a remarkable job of how to prepare ourselves as parents for when we will start talking about this subject.

Packed with information, simple scripts and a bonus sexual abuse prevention video, you will overcome your fears and get on with the birds and the bees talks!

The video itself is relatively short (about 54 minutes), and is split up into several small sections. As a parent, you should educate yourself on this subject – no matter what age your children are – its never too late to start talking to your children. And for those of (like me) that have young children – you will have plenty of time to prepare how to talk with your kiddos someday.

Here are some of the things that I learned:

  • Parents are the #1 primary influence on kids – dating, relationships and sex! – followed by themselves, peers, media, and last religion. (This means that we are the ones that need to step up and have conversations with children about sex)
  • Most children do not have sex for the first time until age 17
  • We need to talk to our children about sexually transmitted diseases, same sex couples, and the basics of what sex is
  • Sexual child abuse can be discussed as early as age 2 (body basics, good touch/bad touch)
  • What age should children learn about sex?
  • Things kids should know before puberty/middle school
  • How to start talking with your kids about the birds+bees

I really enjoyed watching this video! Not only do I know how to approach my girls about this discussion someday, but I will feel confident, and proud knowing that I am going to start an open relationship with my children. I want them to know that they can come to me, and ask me anything they want. I want them to be able to trust me, and talk with me about thier relationships, changes in their bodies, and eventually sex someday. I learned that the “sex talk days” are over – just make it short & sweet,  focus on one topic and have two hundered 1 minute conversations.

I think that this video should be watched by all parents, because ideally we don’t want our babies having babies when they are not ready. We want our children to be confident, and successful adults when it comes to establishing relationships and eventually making decisions about sex.

If you would like to learn more about this video, or Amy Lang. You can visit the Birds+Bees+Kids website, Facebook, and Twitter.
