Once again, gas prices are spiking all across the country. As gas prices hit record levels, you can still save money at the pump. Doesn’t it seem like the gas prices always soar during the summertime? Even in the hot summer months, GasBuddy.com says you can save money on gas.
They explain that using their site and app is a good way to start. “Although one of the easiest ways to save money on gas is to shop around, by using this web site. But there are a number of other things that you can do to keep some of that hard earned money in your pocket, instead of big oils'”
According to GasBuddy, the first thing you need to do is change the way that you handle your vehicle. If you avoid high speeds, you will reduce your fuel consumption. Driving around 60 mph on the highway (compared to 75 mph) will help save.
Make sure you check your tires regularly to ensure that they are properly inflated. According to FuelEconomy.gov, “You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3% by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3% for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.”
Be sure to also keep your windows rolled up when driving. The extra drag on the car will lower your fuel economy. Try to minimize your air conditioner use. Many people believe that running the air conditioner uses gas. That is not true at all. However, running the ac puts an additional strain on your engine which in turn burns more gas.
FuelEconomy.gov also emphasizes the importance of making sure you are using the correct motor oil for your vehicle. “For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage by 1%–2%…also, look for motor oil that says ‘Energy Conserving’ on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives,” according to FuelEconomy.gov.
