The 4th of July will be here before we know it. A time for fireworks, grilling, sparklers, fun in the warm summer sun. Yesterday, we shared a post on grilling hacks and tricks to help you prepare for your 4th of July celebration. Today, we are sharing a delicious dessert recipe (patriotic sugar cookies!) that is frugal and easy to make. We also have a great 4th of July cocktail (the 4th of July Sangria) you can serve at your holiday celebration! The recipe we are sharing today is star spangled sugar cookies. These cookies are patriotic, tasty, and fun to make. The kids can help decorate them!
Patriotic Sugar Cookies
You will need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup of sugar
- 2/3 cup of shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup of milk
- 3 cups of flour
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- and for the frosting…
- 1/2 cup of butter
- approximately 4 cups of powdered sugar (you can adjust the amount based on how thick you want your frosting to be)
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup of evaporated milk
- Fresh strawberries and blueberries
*You also need a star shaped cookie cutter
Patriotic Sugar Cookies Directions:
Start by creaming together the shortening and the sugar. Then add in your milk, vanilla extract, and eggs. In another bowl, mix your baking powder, flour, and salt. Gradually add your dry mixture to your wet mixture. Mix them together until a bowl of dough is formed. Then, refrigerate for a half an hour. Preheat your oven to 350 and place flour on your counter or table. After the dough has refrigerated for 30 minutes, place the ball of dough on your floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll your dough to 1/2″ inch thickness. Cut stars out with your star cookie cutter and place them on your lightly greased cookie sheet. The cookie should bake for 8 to 10 minutes depending on your oven. These are soft sugar cookies, so they should still be somewhat soft when you remove them from the oven. To make the frosting, you should combine all the ingredients in a bowl and blend with a hand mixer until the frosting is smooth. You can frost the cookies once they have cooled. You can decorate with the berries however you like, but it looks nice when you place 3 blueberries in the center of the star. You can slice up your strawberries into vertical thin strips and place them on the cookies as if the strips are coming out of the blueberries.

4th of July Sangria
Our 4th of July cocktail is red, white, and blue sangria. This 4th of July Sangria is really quite festive and delicious without busting a frugal budget!
4th of July Sangria Ingredients:
Sliced strawberries
Blueberries
Pineapple cut into stars
2 bottles of a dry white wine
1 cup of Triple Sec
1/2 cup of your choice of berry flavored vodka
1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup of simple syrup
Combine all the ingredients and chill for a minimum of 4 hours. Serve and enjoy!
