With Father’s Day drawing near, the time you have to grab a gift for Dad is growing shorter. Although dads can be notoriously difficult to shop for, the good news is that there are a ton of merchants discounting father-friendly items in time for the holiday. We’ve combed the dealnews archives to find out which Father’s Day gifts offered the best savings last year so that you can be on the lookout for great bargains this year. After all, there’s almost no better way to repay your dad for bestowing his financial advice over the years than to show him you can save money while getting him an awesome present.
It’s Tool Time
If your old man fancies himself to be a handy man, the weeks leading up Father’s Day are a great time to pick up some new tools. However, if you want to score the best tool deals, you need to shop early. Of all the Editors’ Choice tool deals we saw in late May and early June last year, 65% of them occurred in the first full week of June. Look for discounts that take 40% to 70% off power tools and hand tools from stores like Sears,Home Depot, and Lowe’s.
Save on Fatherly Fashion
We know not everyone wants a power drill. If your dad is more Calvin Klein than Craftsman, never fear! The first part of June is also a great time to grab savings on men’s clothing and accessories. In the weeks leading up to Father’s Day last year, 60% of the men’s clothing sales we saw offered discounts of up to 50% off or greater. Many of these sales were part of summer clearance promotions from merchants like Lands’ End, J. Crew, Express, and Last Call by Neiman Marcus. Although sizes and stock are often limited in clearance sales, there’s no better way to grab brand-name swag for your pops.
Speaking of summer, whose father couldn’t use an awesome pair of sunglasses? If your dad has his eyes on a great pair of specs, this Father’s Day could be a good time to get them. In the first couple weeks of June last year, we saw lots of great deals on men’s sunglasses from brands like Oakley and Ray-Ban. On average, each pair was a price low by $39.
Treat Him to a Home Theater Makeover
This June is also a great time to find a new HDTV, but there are some lessons to be learned from last year’s Father’s Day sales. For one thing, only 14% of the HDTV deals we saw in the weeks leading up to the holiday last year were marked Editors’ Choice. Plus, many of the TVs we saw were from lesser-known brands. So if your dad has his heart set on a brand-name HDTV, he may need to wait.
However, if Dad already has the big screen, consider purchasing audio components for his home theater setup. Last year, 24% of our audio components deals (which includes items like speaker and home theater systems, soundbars, and headphones) in the weeks leading up to Father’s Day were marked Editors’ Choice. We saw great bargains on brands like Pioneer, Sony, and Harman Kardon from merchants like World Wide Stereo, TigerDirect, and Fry’s Electronics.
All in all, Father’s Day sales offer a great opportunity to snatch up an awesome gift for the big guy and a killer excuse to save money on some high-end brands. Still not sure what to get Dad? Check out our Father’s Day gift guide for some price-checked suggestions!
